well hello March

If January felt like years, like getting sucker-punched daily, February went by in a flash, like a hit-and-run.
I'm writing as best I can.
The horrors are deep and sickening.
Canadians boo USians. (how!?)
We are not who we were 1.5 months ago, not who we thought we were or imagined we could be.
At a parade the other night we watched yet another suburban krewe sashay by to tired '50's tunes. "The good old days," someone commented.
And a friend turned, with a studied look. Good for whom?

Family has been familying. I got an unexpectedly sweet thank you from a niece; and then a strange greeting card and even stranger email from other fam. We are all losing it, quietly, desperately, and with a mightily-summoned measure of dignity.

Buffalo. 10 beloved souls gone.

Uvalde. 19 beloved children and 2 beloved teachers gone.

The mind staggers, the heart trembles. Burn it all to the ground.

 

both sides-ing us to death

I was up early, after a restless night. As I got ready for the day I listened to NPR for about 15 minutes.

Normally I find Scott Simon agreeable if a little boomer.

But today. Fuck! Our so-called liberal media is killing us with their both sides-ism.

First a story about the leaked Supreme Court memo. Nothing bakes my cake quite like listening to Simon and Ron Elving, two old white men, talking about how DENYING US BODILY AUTONOMY is going to shake out for the political parties. Boo-fucking-hoo for the people in power. One side flat-out fascist, the other, dithering social secretaries trying to keep us all from rioting. It makes me sick.

Next, Simon's story about how Dave Chappelle got tackled at his comedy show. The circumstances are unclear and I'm glad he's ok but Simon stated that his next joke, after the attack, was maybe the attacker was a trans man. And the whole point of the piece, again by a white man, is it's scary to be a comedian. Not that someone with power and a platform continues to make jokes about trans people.

Do better NPR. This is shameful.

Don't miss Geena Davis' documentary on Netflix, "This Changes Everything." About the stranglehold men have had on TV and film for the past seventy years. It's intentional and despite the gains of the past few years, don't think the sphere of power is about to change. 

When the mens don't get their way, they cry, and everyone panics.

On such a horrific news day--what to feel? 50 lives lost. 50 people out having fun at an Orlando dance club, their lives cut short and for what?
I feel so much anger, sadness, despair, weariness, loss.
And defiance. Yes, defiance. We will continue to hope, to love, to dance.
